The Titles Do the Worldbuilding

There is a whole rural narrative in the tracklist and it is not subtle: “This Cabin Ain’t Empty,” “That Old Oak Has Got To Come Down,” “Real Pine Scented Air,” “Ain’t Even Got a Nickel,” “On The Gravel Again.” Read top to bottom it moves from arrival through decline to something like recovery — the record opens on “Ante on Up” and closes on “Things Are Looking Up.”

Most tracks sit between two and a half and three and a half minutes, which is beat-tape length rather than song length. “Time After Time” at 4:20 is the one piece given room to stretch.
