Silent Machines 1-9: Nine Hours of Drone in Six Weeks
Between January 5 and February 14, 2026 - six weeks, one release roughly every five days - musical nature put out nine volumes of Silent Machines. Each volume is a single unbroken track. The shortest is 45 minutes. The longest is an hour and eighteen. Together they run close to nine hours of continuous drone.
This is the largest single body of work in the recent catalog and it deserves to be treated as one piece rather than nine, which is why it gets one post instead of nine.
The Premise
Volume 1 laid out the frame, and it is worth quoting in full because it is the only real narrative the series ever offers:
That framing - recovered files, an abandoned facility, an unclear number of machines still running - carries through all nine volumes without ever being explained further. By Volume 9 the notes have become soundwaves excavated from the archives of forgotten machinery. The steady heartbeat of obsolete technology.
The Nine Volumes
How They Differ
They are not interchangeable, though they are close relatives. Reading the release notes in sequence, a few things separate them:
- Volumes 1-2 establish the low end - "the lower reaches of the audible spectrum," space and silence as the primary compositional elements, no conventional tempo.
- Volume 3 is the most processed of the early run: "crystalline textures refract through layers of processing."
- Volume 4 is the first to break an hour and states the method plainly - unmetered, beyond conventional tempo, freely flowing without metric constraint.
- Volumes 5-6 are the most conventionally beautiful, with Volume 6 leaning into "harmonic overtones" and gradual unfolding.
- Volume 7 goes underwater: "wavelengths lengthen as water fills the empty corridors."
- Volume 8 has the shortest description in the series - a single sentence, "subtle pulses organize the formless into structure" - and is the tightest of the nine.
- Volume 9 is the longest at 1:17:55 and the one that returns most directly to the machinery premise from Volume 1.
Where to Start
If you want the series thesis in one sitting, start with Volume 1 - it is the shortest path to understanding what the other eight are doing. If you want the most immersive single listen, Volume 9 is the longest and the most fully realized. If you are using these for sleep or focus work, Volume 5 at a clean 45:00 is the easiest one to fit into a session.

What Came Next
The series wrapped February 14, 2026. PORTABLE SOUND DEVICE had already slipped out between Volumes 6 and 7, and after Volume 9 the catalog went quiet on the musical nature side until JWM, Pt. 1 in May.
